What we Do and What YOU can Do to help

IMG 20161201 WA0014Elsen Academy is an independent special needs school (EMIS 101021) that caters for students from grades 1-12. We are also a registered NPO (056 – 340) and receive no government subsidy. Each year we find ourselves turning away many potential students, who we can see desperately need what we can offer, because of affordability. The parents are from the previously disadvantaged group.

By adding to our bursary fund from your CSI spend, we would be able to offer our school to more parents from the previously disadvantaged group. As of now we are having to turn away many of these students as our bursary fund is limited.

We currently have 137 pupils in the school from grade 1-12.
We could take 168 pupils. We have 25 educators; this means that our pupil-teacher ratio is 5:1. This enables the individual attention to take place. Added to that are 4 psychologists, an occupational therapist as well as a two speech therapists. Our pupils follow the same curriculum as the state schools and our grade 12 class writes the same matric as the state schools. Our matric class of 2016 achieved a 100% pass rate with 4 students obtaining a university pass!! Some of them had been told that they would never get a matric.

We have a B-BBEE Level 2 status and procurement recognition of 125%, which is where we can help you!

We are currently receiving R130 000 per year from a donor. We split this money between 4 current students. The impact is beyond words as they are in a school that can cater for their individual numerous needs. The bursaries do come with certain conditions and are awarded annually provided the conditions are met.

Our most important condition is that the parents commit to play a very active part in their child's education. They are required to supervise homework and to attend parent-teacher meetings. My teachers are required to communicate every day with every pupil and as parents there is thus no excuse not to be involved.

Any support would be greatly appreciated. I would be happy to provide any additional information you might require.

Kind regards

Mark Barclay
