Overview

The Remedial CAPS Phase at Elsen Academy provides a supportive high school experience for learners with barriers to learning. With smaller classes, an adapted curriculum, and a focus on confidence-building, this phase prepares learners for educational learnerships and vocational pathways beyond Grade 9.

About the programme

The Remedial CAPS Phase is designed for learners who require a more individualised academic pathway. Learners complete Grades 8 and 9 over an extended 18-month cycle, giving them time to progress steadily while reducing stress and pressure.

  • English and Afrikaans are taught at grade level.
  • Mathematics is adapted to a practical Maths Literacy approach.
  • Other subjects run in six-month blocks, with continuous assessment replacing traditional high-stakes exams.
  • Tasks are broken into smaller, achievable components, with limited homework and strong in-class support.

Classes are intentionally small – currently 4 learners, with capacity for 12 learners. Teaching is led by experienced high school educators, with additional input from Heads of Department in specialised subject areas.

Hannah Bosch – background and teaching philosophy

Head of the Remedial CAPS Phase at Elsen Academy, bringing 10 years of experience working with learners who present with a wide range of learning barriers, including ADHD, dyslexia, autism spectrum disorders, and processing difficulties. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that all learners can make meaningful academic progress when instruction is adapted with intention, structure, and empathy. I specialise in translating and adapting the CAPS curriculum into accessible, scaffolded learning pathways that prioritise consolidation, functional literacy, and learner confidence. My approach balances academic rigour with emotional safety, focusing on skill mastery, consistency, and realistic pacing to support long-term growth. I am committed to creating an inclusive learning environment where neurodivergent and vulnerable learners are not “managed,” but understood, supported, and equipped for sustainable success beyond the classroom.
