Online learning at Elsen
Established in 2018, The Learning Academy is an educational support centre, where students have the opportunity to work in groups and interact socially with other children, while working through their chosen curriculum content online. The Learning Academy is suited to students who are self-driven and prefer to set their own pace for learning. The Grade 12 learners write their external exams with SACAI, accredited with Umalusi, and receive the same matric certificate as other learners in the government schools.
We serve learners who…
- Are not coping with mainstream culture,
- Don’t like working in large groups,
- Are academically capable but need support,
- Are physically not able to cope with “normal” school,
- Want to improve and do well,
- Have self-discipline & are self motivated,
- Are in Grades 4 and above.

Jill Barclay – HOD
As HOD, Administrator and Facilitator Jill plays a pivotal role in shaping the vision, driving educational excellence and fostering a supportive environment for staff and learners, managing resources so that the Learning Academy operates efficiently.
Facilitator
Our facilitator, Mr David Maxwell, fondly known as Mr Max, is the resident teacher/facilitator at the Learning Academy. He is always ready to help learners do their best, build their confidence, and acknowledge and encourage their unique skills to be the best that they can be. He also plays a crucial role in guiding learners through their learning journey. Adapting teaching methods to meet diverse styles of learning ensuring that each student feels supported to help them reach their full potential.
