Vocational phase at Elsen
The Vocational Phase at Elsen Academy is a purposefully designed pathway for learners who find the traditional academic stream challenging, yet thrive through hands-on learning, practical application and meaningful stimulation. This phase recognises that success looks different for every learner and provides an alternative route that values functional skills, independence and real-world readiness.

Senior combined class
Learners in the Vocational Phase follow an adapted CAPS curriculum, carefully structured to prioritise understanding, relevance and practical application. Learning is paced to support individual progress while maintaining clear outcomes and expectations.
The curriculum focuses on:
- English – developing reading for understanding and functional communication
- Mathematics – practical mathematics for everyday life
- Life Skills – building independence, social skills and daily living competencies
- Knowledge Network – developing essential computer and digital skills
- Consumer Studies – hands-on learning through cooking, sewing and gardening
- General Knowledge – relevant topics drawn from History, Geography and Natural Sciences, connected to everyday contexts
- Practical Skills – woodwork and basic carpentry skills that promote problem-solving and manual competence
To support individual growth, learners engage daily with Reading Eggs, MathSeeds and Mathletics, allowing them to progress at their own pace while reinforcing foundational skills.
While the curriculum is adapted, learners remain fully part of the wider school community. They participate in assemblies, outings, physical education and shared activities, ensuring social integration and a strong sense of belonging across phases.
The Vocational Phase caters for learners aged 10 to 19 and is supported by a range of therapeutic and developmental programmes, including:
- Rhythmic Writing
- Neuronet
- Emotional and behavioural therapeutic support
This integrated support model ensures that learners are not only taught practical skills, but are also supported emotionally, socially and neurologically.
The Vocational Phase is ideal for learners who learn best through doing, creating and experiencing. It provides a respectful, structured and supportive environment where learners can build confidence, develop essential life skills and work towards meaningful independence.
